Lake Tahoe has a long and unique history. It was molded over 2 million years ago when the land was scoured and scraped by glaciers during an ice age. The Lake Tahoe Basin is the area in which it is housed. The lake is known not only for the beautiful area that surrounds it, but for also having an unusually clear fresh water lake. This area is also home to an extinct volcano known as Mount Pluto.

Residing at an elevation of 6,225 feet, it is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of the United States. Near to California’s border, it is not far from the famous Carson city. It has a depth of 1,645 feet, which makes it the second deepest lake in the United States. It also ranks as the 26th largest lake by volume (122,160,280 acre-ft) in the world and the 16th deepest as measured by average depth.

With an average temperature of 78, August tends to be the warmest month in the Tahoe area.7 Fahrenheit. January is the coldest time of the year with an average minimum temperature of 15.1 fahrenheit. The middle or end of April marks the end of the ski season that typically begins in mid-November.

The first people to reside in this area were the Washoe tribe of Native Americans. They resided in the great lake area and the upper valleys of the Walker, Tuckee, and Carson rivers. In a not too unusual occurance, the name Tahoe result from a mispronunciation of the Washo word for lake – “da aw”. It is believed that the Wahoe people resided in the Lake Tahoe Basin for over 6000 years. Typically from year to year, they would move to the lower and warmer valleys during fall and winter and would reside in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the spring and summer months.

Residents of both Nevada and California are frequent visitors to the area, thanks to the lovely environment there, plus its convenient location and clean water.. It offers great summer activities, but is better known for its ski season, which comprises a good portion of the area’s income. Getting to the area is a snap from any of the large cities in the region. Reno, Carson and Sacramento are also well served by highways. There are no less than five airports in the vicinity of Tahoe if one wishes to get there by air.

For those who like gambling, it should be noted that it is legal on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. On the South Shore of the lake, in Stateline, one can find a variety of hotels featuring gaming tables and slot machines. The north shore Crystal Bay and Incline Village also offer a variety of gambling activities. Many gaming establishments in the area have been active since before gambling was officially made legal in 1931.
